We were rockin’ it this week as we prepared for our big reunification drill for Friday.

In math, we started looking at patterns, using different manipulative to place objects into ABAB, AABBAABB, and ABC patterns. We will continue working on patterns for the next two weeks.

With out letter work, we practiced the letter c, k, e, and h. We read a story, sang a sound song, and practiced our printing work.

We finished out work on raccoons. This is all the things our class learned about.

We also created some artwork and poetry to share what we have learned about raccoons. There was some guided help with the printing. They are displayed outside our room for viewing.

With our letter h, we practiced drawing a house. Here is my guided drawing, and a few of the student samples.

We drew houses because we have been learning about our Rights and responsibilities. One of which is every child had a right to living with a roof over their head. Next week we will continue talking about rights, and more responsibilities each and every one has.

Next week is our thanksgiving week, where we will learn about responsibilities, giving and being thankful, and work on some turkey crafts.

We will also be meeting with our big buddy class, and making some kind of pumpkin pie tart. It will be an exciting Friday.

Have a good weekend, and see you Monday.

Hello!

Our second fun week of learning has ended! Our class has really started getting those routines down, we just need to work on our noise level a bit.

Earlier in the week we completed our ‘a is for apple’ cut outs, now displayed inside our room. Some good cutting practice with our scissors.

We worked on the letters I, P, and N this week, singing our songs, sounding out the letter sound, and practicing our printing.

We started learning about raccoons, my favourite animal. As a class, we started a KWL chart, listing what we know about raccoons, and what we wonder about. After reading a couple of stories, by next week we will have learned a lot, and complete what we have learned about.

We also tried our hand at drawing a raccoon, with direct to draw. Mine is the top, and below is a couple of the students.

Our Terry Fox run was a success, with our class raising over $20 for the Terry Fox Foundation. All the boys and girls were very excited to participate in the run, with myself leading the primary run around the field.

This week we have been practice our fire drills in preparation for the reunification drill next Friday the 28th. We will most likely practice an earthquake drill before then.

Next week we will look at the letters CKEH, investigate patterns using shapes and colours, finish up our work about raccoons, and dive deeper into our Rights and Responsibilities work. Friday the 28th is orange shirt day, and our reunification drill. Should be a lot of fun!

Have a good weekend, and see you Monday.

Congradulations, we (I) made it past the first week!

Wednesday was our first full day in our new classroom, and it was full of energy and excitement. Thursday we started to get more into the groove, and by Friday it seemed that almost everyone was starting to get the hang of our routines.

This week we have worked on three letters: s, a, and t. Ask what sound each letter makes to help practice.

We looked at lining up in a number line, ordered 1 to 20, by matching our number and finding where we belong.

On Thursday we practiced spelling our names, and on Friday we created a name mosaic art piece, which is currently in our hallway.

Next week we will look at the letters i, p, and n, play some matching games with getting to know our friends in the class, and start subitizing numbers 1 to 5.

No school Monday, and Wednesday is our meet the teacher night at 6pm, hopefully see you there!

Welcome!

Dear Parents & Guardians of Division 12,

Welcome to kindergarten! My name is Mr. Stephenson, and I will be your child’s teacher for this school year. This will be an exciting year filled with new friendships, exploration and discovery as we learn about the fundamentals of literacy and numeracy and the routines of school. Kindergarten is a time for children to expand their love of learning, their general knowledge, their ability to get along with others, and their interest in the world around them.

Throughout the year, students will each have the opportunity to bring our class Curious George doll home on the weekend along with a book to read. Instructions will be sent home when it is your child’s turn. They will share what activities they did with George the following week.

As children will be spending recess breaks outside, please dress your child for the weather. Rain gear is recommended for dreary days as children will only have indoor recesses during heavy rainfall.

In addition to the standard school supplies, please send the following:

  • Indoor shoes (labelled with their name) – To help keep our school and classroom clean
  • Two changes of clothes (underwear, shirt, pants and socks) – For emergency changes as being a kindergartener can be messy.

We will be having a meet the teacher night at Ruth King on Wednesday, September 19th, at 6 p.m. I look forward to seeing you there.

Looking forward to a great year!

Mr. Stephenson
